In one of the biggest recruitment drive, Indian Railway has received 2.8 Crore application so far against vacancy of 90,000. The count is increasing as today is last day to apply.

Indian Railway is on a recruitment drive for Level 1 and Level 2 employees (as per 7th Pay commission). 62,907 vacancies have been announced for Level 1 employee which includes Gangmen, Switchmen, Trackmen, cabinmen, welders, helpers and porters in the pay band of  INR 18,000-56,000. For level 2 employees 26,502 vacancies have been announced for the loco pilot, technicians, Carpenters, and Crane Drivers in the pay band of INR 19,000- 63,200.

Additional 20000 openings shall be announced in next month. Which will make total hiring of 1.1L. Indian Railways is currently having more than 13L employees.

BJP government is being criticised heavily on “Job Less” growth. This recruitment drive may be used as a political tool to counter such criticism.

Indian Railways was in the cost-cutting mode to reduce the expense. In past few years, no major recruitment drive have had happened. This left the organization with many vacant positions which are now troublesome for smooth operation.

Reason for huge turnout?

Joblessness is a common and biggest issue among youths. Many graduates and well-qualified youth are jobless. In such situation, nothing can be better than a government job.

The education qualification required for these openings were High School Graduates or ITI. Not only the high school graduates but many overqualified youths have also applied.

Good or Bad?

Job opportunity is always a good news but kind of joblessness is being reflected through this, is worrisome. Applicant to job ratio is nearly 300:1 and this is not a healthy situation.

The government still need to focus more on job creation. Also, the way population is increasing, Government will have a limited solution. And this is really bad.
